Agile role to skill mapping
Below is the role to skill mapping interviewers can use while hiring the candidates for Agile roles. Obviously, the expectations will change as per the needs of the organization and every organization is unique. But below is how i have seen at least a few organizations hiring.

- Junior Scrum Master: If you are hiring for a small team and you need an entry level scrum master. you should be fine with candidate having theoretical knowledge of scrum and Kanban to get started with. this will mean there will be a learning curve for the scrum master once he or she starts on the assignment
- Senior scrum master: In addition to theoretical knowledge of scrum and Kanban, expectation from the candidate would be to have hands-on experience of working in the framework. To verify this, you can add some scenario based questions which typically only a candidate with experience will be able to answer.
- Scaled scrum master: If you are hiring a scrum master for a team that is placed SAFe or any of the scaled agile framework, you will need a scrum master who has knowledge of all the additional responsibilities like dependency resolution and risk roaming etc.
- Senior Scaled Scrum Master: For a senior scaled scrum master, in addition to everything needed for all the above roles, the expectation will be to have real life experience of leading such teams. To verify this, you can start with asking scenario based questions.
- Release Train Engineer: usually for an RTE role, you would want someone who has strong expereince as a scrum master in scaled agile setup. in which case such a candidate would have worked with RTEs and would at high level understanding of the role.
- Senior Release Train Engineer: in additional to above skills, this candidiate should also have real life experience of working in ARTs as a RTE. This can again be judged by asking questions which are more scenario based.
Happy Hiring !!
